Women in the Military and other branches of the service. History books will tell you that women have been serving in the military for over 3000 years. They have been playing different roles in the military throughout different cultures and nations. But truth be told, all such roles have been support roles-like nurses, clerks and aides. Well, that’s up until the last century anyway. Now, women  have diversified their tasks. And the way the trend is going, the ladies will soon be eligible to all jobs in the military. For instance, Pentagon officials say all services are on track to open all military jobs to women by 2016. In fact, rules for those changes are to be in place by this fall. Let’s look at the roles ladies play in the military today.

Women in the Military – Army

Currently, women serve in 91% of all Army occupations. For now, they aren’t allowed to serve in either the infantry or the special operations commands. Nevertheless, their supporting roles bring them closer to the line of combat. The women soldiers serve in various professional positions such as medics (doctors, nurses and operating techs), gunners, helicopter pilots, truck drivers, and the military police. They are also work in engineering, tactical operations, supply and procurement. Women  today perform duties similar to those of men. Women also love to wear military rings to display their pride in the service.

Navy

The Navy offers women a vast range of roles to participate in. This includes those former stereotypical male roles. There are Electronics Technicians to Naval Reactor Engineers. Women can work with advanced weapon systems or construct anything from buildings to runways. They can be Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians, Air crewmen, Navy Divers, or even Naval Aviators. The Navy is equally keen in training women  as men. Navy Rings are made for women in Gold and Silver.

Coast Guard

This is including the extended Search and rescue, Environmental Protection, Maritime law Enforcement, Port Security and Military Readiness. Whether it’s the CG Officers, CG enlisted, Reserves or the Auxiliary, all positions are open to women  as well as men. The enlisted officers serve in dozens or roles, from law enforcement and aviation to maritime patrols.

Air Force

Women are everywhere in the Air force. Take Aviation for instance-there are in fighter, bomber, special ops, helicopter, generalist, trainer and reconnaissance warfare tracks. In technical jobs, they serve as refueling specialists, crew chefs, in fire response, search and recover, and administrative support. What of non-technical jobs? They are in command and control, healthcare positions, operations and aircraft maintenance. They even serve in specialty units such as Judge Advocate Corps, Chaplaincy and the musical units.

Marine Corps

Visit any of the training bases such as Camp LeJune or Camp Pendleton you will find women training alongside men. They are sent to perform duties in combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. Women in the Marines sacrifice perhaps a lot more than men in terms of parenthood. The marine corps rings the women wear can be personalized to show the division they serve with.

More and more women are rising to higher positions within the military. Gender-neutral standards are being developed for all military occupations. With the same standard being applied for men and women, the number of women in the military will increase. In fact, they are already serving in unprecedented roles. And it’s not because they have the military occupational specialty, but because they’re there.
